Smart-Plug

Head of the class in sealing fractures

Smart-Plug is a proprietary blend of key lost circulation material designed to help cure severe losses in large fractures or highly porous and depleted formations during drilling, completion or work over operations.  When pumped ahead of cement squeezes, Smart-Plug will assist in improving formation integrity and leak-off tests.

The performance of Smart-Plug lies in the wide PSD of the materials and the ability of certain components to expand during the curing process sealing the porous zone.

Advantages and Benefits

Mixing & Spotting Procedures

1.   Identify thief/loss zone.  Calculate volumes needed to cover all potential loss zones with 25% excess.  Mix the Smart-Plug to the volume needed.

Note:  Extra slurry volume may be needed for squeeze procedures.

2.   Mix Smart-Plug in a clean mixing tank and all associated lines with fresh water.  Be sure to remove all pump screens or filters.

6.  3 bags (50# sack) (22.7 kg) Fibresol

Note:  When the last sack of material is mixed the pill is ready to pump pill.

3.   Place bit or open ended drill string 100’ above estimated top of Smart-Plug.

4.   Displace the Smart-Plug slurry out of the drill sting at comfortable pump rates.  Slow the pump rate to 1-2 bbls (0.16 – 0.32 m3/min) per minutes until the Smart-Plug pill has completely cleared drill string plus extra 5-10 bbls (0.8 – 1.6 m3)isplace the Smart-Plug slurry out of the drill sting at comfortable pump rates.  Slow the pump rate to 1-2 bbls per minutes until the Smart-Plug pill has completely cleared drill string plus extra 5-10 bbls.

5. Stop pumping, make sure the annulus side is full – fill-up if necessary.

6. Pull up 100 feet (30.5 m) above the top of the pill make sure the annulus side is full.

7. Close annular BOP and slowly pump at ± 1 bbl/minute 0.16 m3/min) applying a squeeze to the Smart-Plug slurry.

8. When squeeze pressure has reached 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm2), stop pumping and hold pressure for 10 minutes.  Begin slowly pumping again and if squeeze pressure continue to rise, again stop pumping and hold pressure for 20 minutes.

**Precise monitoring of the drill pipe and casing pressure is very important.  Continue this procedure until 300-400 psi (21.1 – 28.1 kg/cm2) squeeze is reached.  Hold pressure for 6 hours.  Open well up and circulate bottom up.

9. If circulation is not gained, follow-up pill should be spotted.

10. If circulation is established – TIH – slowly wash/ream out any bridges and continue normal drilling operations.
